The 2027 Manitoba High School Ice Fishing Championship is entering its 4th year, and we are excited to announce our new host location: Gimli, MB! (Following high school championship tradition, the event rotates locations periodically after three great years at Balsam Bay.)
Event Details & Rules
Eligibility: Open to all Manitoba High School students. Only bona-fide, registered students are eligible for individual awards and official prizes.
Registration & Cost: $20 per student. Teachers or Program Leads must register their students as a unified school team—individual student entries will not be accepted.
Supervision: This is an officially sanctioned school event. Teacher/supervisor presence is required for each participating school. Teachers/supervisors do not need a ticket, do not pay an entry fee, and do not compete for prizes or contribute to the team banner score.
Entry Fees: 100% of collected funds go directly toward the prize pool and event operations.
Derby Day Schedule & Regulations
Format: Traditional derby setup. Fishing holes will be pre-drilled.
Hours: 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM.
Boundaries: All fishing must take place within the designated marked grid. No motorized vehicles are allowed in the grid area.
Shelters/Tents: Tents and pop-up shelters are not permitted inside the grid area under normal conditions. In the case of severe weather, tournament directors may authorize tents; any changes will be emailed to staff supervisors in advance or announced over the loudspeakers on event morning.
Scoring & Awards
Catch & Release: When a fish is caught, a derby official will measure and record the fish directly at the hole before it is safely released.
School Team Banner: Each school’s score will be calculated using their top 5 walleye or sauger catches toward the aggregate total.
Individual & Door Prizes: Every participating student is eligible for individual placement awards, and random draw prizes will be awarded throughout the day!
